| 10192. LEBANON IN THE 1990S: GREATER BEIRUT OF MORE WAR? This paper investigates and analyzes the Lebanese Civil War, focusing on events since the 1982 Israeli invasion of Beirut. Following a brief historical background on the war, the paper examines the major economic, political, religious and ethnic causes of the conflict. The main internal contenders in the conflict are examined both from the perspective of religion/ethnicity and from the perspective of their political and/or military allegiance. The main objectives, strategies and tactics of each are discussed. The role of the central foreign players -- Syria (particularly focus is given to Syria), Israel, the other Arab nations, and the superpowers -- is likewise examined and analyzed. 20p., 84f., 42. |
