This paper presents an overview and analysis of post traumatic stress disorder with an emphasis on its association with comorbid alcohol and substance abuse disorders. The phenomenology of PTSD is described, including its symptomology, diagnostic classification, course of illness, and prevalence. Biological as well as psychological components of the disorder are considered. To further understand how to treat this disorder, the analysis considers its etiology and the role of comorbid psychiatric disorders, particularly substance/alcohol abuse.
