13123. SUPRA-NATIONALITY AND THE DECLINE OF STATE SOVEREIGNTY: THE CASE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU). This paper examines the EU as a case of globalization. It is argued that both favorable and adverse consequences of globalization can be discerned within the inherent conflict between the state sovereignty of the EU members and the emerging supra-national sovereignty of the EU polity. As background to this analysis, the first part of the paper examines general trends and indications in the decline of state sovereignty which have occurred in tandem with the advance of globalization. A second part examines the history and central features of the EU supranational structure. A third part looks directly at some of the major elements of conflict between EU sovereignty and European state sovereignty. Part four looks briefly at the international implications of the emergence of EU supranational sovereignty. 16p., 54f., 23b.
