Search by topic:   17717. THE NAACP AND THE COLD WAR. This paper provides an overview and analysis of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s (NAACP) positions on Cold War issues and its responses to the challenges and controversies emerging from Cold War politics and policies. The analysis includes a discussion of the NAACP’s links to and position on Communism, its stance on the major Cold War initiatives, and its position on decolonization and the emerging African nations within the context of the US-Soviet struggle for international dominance. It is argued that the Cold War and charges of Communist influence within the organization put the NAACP on the defensive and ultimately limited its effectiveness as an organ for civil rights. It will be seen that in its struggle to define itself as unequivocally pro-American and anti-communist, the NAACP retreated from efforts to advance human rights abroad and economic and social rights at home, instead focusing on more narrowly proscribed civil rights for African-Americans in the US.
