| 17313. THE POETRY OF LANGSTON HUGHES. This paper provides an overview of the poems of Langston Hughes. (1902-1967). In general, the subject matter and themes of Hughes’s poems are concerned with the life of African Americans during the period from the 1920s through the 1960s. Providing examples from many of Hughes’ best-known poems (e.g., “Harlem”, “Song for a Dark Girl,” “Uncle Tom,” etc.), the paper discusses the poet’s use of the black vernacular and other techniques and considers some of the recurring themes in his work.
