| 17399. THE SUPPLY CHAIN IN THE U.S. PLASTICS INDUSTRY. This paper provides an overview and analysis of supply chain management (encompassing production management and distribution management) in the U.S. plastics industry (SIC 2821, Plastics Materials and Resins), drawing on examples from both the major big players and information as available from small and mid-sized companies. The analysis traces the physical movement of plastic product and product components from original feedstock supplier (e.g., petrochemical producer) to final product manufacturer (e.g., PET bottle maker) to end users (e.g., software bottling companies, food packaging companies, etc.). The paper discusses the problems, challenges and difficulties in supply chain management within the industry, focusing on the special challenges facing smaller companies who cannot rely on automated supply chain management techniques.
