Search by topic:   18088. AMBROISE THOMAS' OPERA HAMLET. This paper is concerned with the 1868 opera Hamlet (based on Shakespeare's play), by the French composer Ambroise Thomas. It is argued that the work has declined in popularity because it lacks emotional depth and power (due to its contrived happy ending and its use of overly decorative music). Despite its flaws, however, the opera has some redeeming qualities and memorable scenes, and it serves as a good example of a historical style in music.
