18213. MEXICAN-AMERICANS AND TYPE-2 DIABETES. This paper critiques a research study regarding the use of Explanatory Models by Mexican-Americans (on the Texas/Mexico border) with Type-2 diabetes. The study finds that both traditional folk beliefs and biomedical beliefs (acquired through local clinic interventions) are used in attempting to understand the disease and cope with it. The study is criticized for its use of a small specific sample (which limits the ability to generalize the findings); nonetheless, the study provides important insights for the improvement of treatment and education efforts for this type of population.
